Make a comfortable fern corner

Start with the particular fern, then design its surroundings.

Ferns are a diverse group, so begin with the name on the label rather than assuming that all ferns need the same conditions. Many commonly grown indoor ferns appreciate gentle light and a growing mix that does not repeatedly become completely dry. They still need drainage and should not sit in stagnant water.

Choose a position away from a hot radiator and inspect fronds regularly. Browning can have several causes, including dry roots, unsuitable light or changes in the room. Check the pot and recent care history before adding more water. A small humidity meter can describe the room more usefully than guessing from how the air feels.

Care requirements vary by species and growing conditions. Use these notes as a starting point for observation.
