Water by observation, not by calendar

A reminder should prompt a check, not automatically another watering.

Water use changes with light, temperature, pot size and the growing mix. A weekly reminder can be useful, but first check the mix at a depth appropriate for the plant. Surface colour alone is unreliable. Lift the pot occasionally to learn the difference between its recently watered and drier weight.

When watering is needed, apply water slowly and allow excess to drain away. Empty standing water from the outer pot or saucer. The right amount of drying between waterings depends on the species: a fern and a desert cactus should not share a rule. Write down what you observe before adjusting your routine.
